Beatle-related news: Sir Paul's been granted an honorary degree from Yale! news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080526/ap_en_mu/mccartney_yaleYale gives Paul McCartney honorary degree 1 hour, 28 minutes ago NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Paul McCartney can now add one more honor to the numerous awards, accolades and the knighthood he has already received. The ex-Beatle on Monday was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. In granting the honorary degree to McCartney — Sir Paul McCartney since he was knighted in 1996 — the university said no one compares with the legendary songwriter. Yale said the 65-year-old McCartney awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock, roll, rhythm and blues. Yale also conferred honorary degrees on former U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills, astronomer Martin Rees, architect Cesar Pelli, poet John Lawrence Ashbery and others.

Paul McCartney gives charity concert in Ukrainenews.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080614/ap_en_mu/people_mccartneyBy OLGA BONDARUK, Associated Press Writer 42 minutes ago KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Tens of thousands of people braved heavy rain and thunder Saturday night to see Paul McCartney perform a charity concert on Kiev's central Independence Square. The outdoor show, the first in Ukraine for the former Beatle, was billed as the biggest concert ever in the former Soviet republic. It was broadcast live on national television and on giant screens in five cities. After a half-hour delay because of the weather, McCartney, who turns 66 next week, came out on the stage and greeted the crowd in Ukrainian, before diving into the Beatles hit "Drive My Car." Before the concert, fans in five major cities sang Beatles songs in a live TV linkup with the capital. The square where McCartney played was the site of the Orange Revolution in 2004, when peaceful mass protests overturned a fraudulent election and brought a pro-Western opposition leader to power. Organizers said the money raised will be spent on diagnostic equipment for Ukraine's National Cancer Institute's children's department. Many children now seek treatment abroad because Ukraine lacks the necessary equipment. The concert was free but the organizers were asking for donations from Ukrainian businessmen and others. More than 500 people have contributed a total of about $600,000 and donations were continuing to come in, said Tatyana Overina, spokeswoman for the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, which organized the concert. Pinchuk, a billionaire businessman and Ukraine's richest man, established the foundation in 2006 to contribute to the modernization of Ukraine and bring forward a new generation of Ukrainian leaders.

I just got my June newsletter from Beatle Brunch. Thought you guys might like to hear some pertinent highlights from their batch of Beatles news:
---
Ringo’s on Tour with his 10th All Starr Band. He tells Joe Johnson in an exclusive interview, that they’ll be playing “Oh, My My” on the tour for the first time, and have added a new member, legendary keyboardist, Gary Wright. When asked how it was going with Gary, Ringo told Joe, “Just fine if I could get him to stop smiling”. Catch the gig in your city. And watch for Ringo’s new Tour 2006 CD and DVD due out soon.
Paul just played two incredible concerts, live from Liverpool on June 1st, then recently for several hundred thousand in Kiev. What’s really cool, is he’s playing more “new” songs. This tour he’s brought out “Mrs. Vanderbilt” from Band on the Run, and “A Day in the Life” blended with “Give Peace a Chance”, plus more than 20 other numbers. Don’t miss him on what could be his last tour!
The Cirque du Soleil show, “LOVE” celebrates its 2nd anniversary this summer at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Look for Joe Johnson hosting many Beatle Brunch events at The Fest June 29-July 2nd. Apple is also coming out with a Cirque du Soleil DVD. Not the show, but incredible behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. Look for it this summer.
There’s something new coming from George Harrison’s camp soon, too. We can’t tell you what it is, but Beatle Brunch was contacted to help find some lost materials. Stay tuned!
